Barium Blue Matt

INTRODUCTION

A ceramic glaze is an impervious layer or coating of a vitreous substance which has been fused to a ceramic body through firing. Glazes can serve to color, decorate or waterproof an item. Glazing renders earthenware vessels suitable for holding liquids, sealing the inherent porosity of terracotta. Glaze is also used on stoneware and porcelain. In addition to their functional aspect, glazes can form a variety of surface finishes, including degrees of glossy or matte finish and color. Glazes may also enhance the underlying design or texture either unmodified or inscribed, carved or painted. Glaze is used to weatherproof brick or tile building materials. The Iron Pagoda, built in 1049 in Kalfene, China, of glazed bricks is an example
Most commonly, a glaze is an aqueous suspension of various powdered minerals and metal oxides applied by dipping pieces directly into the glaze. Other techniques include pouring the glaze over the piece, spraying it onto the piece with an airbrush or similar tool, or applying it directly with a brush or other tool.

The study of glazes is much more complex and difficult than that of clays. Many more variables, chemicals and materials must be taken into account to be successful. To formulate glazes, accurate procedures are necessary  in order to achieve success and predictability.

Glazes behave differently under various conditions such as materials and water used, conditions of preparation and application, techniques of stacking and firing, etc.
Silica is the main glass-former but it is very refractory, it melts at 3100 ºF/1705 ºC.
Other glass-formers are Boron and Phosphates as in Bone Ash and Woodash. So, some means of lowering the melting point of Silica is by adding some fluxing oxides : Sodium, Potassium, Lead, Litiuum, Calcium, Magnesium, Zinc and Boron.

Alumina is present in glazes mainly as part of clays and feldspars, also it may be added as Calcined Alumina or Alumina Hydrate, and it is also present in frits. It is very refractory, stabilizes glazes and prevents running. Depending on the amount used, it may render a glaze, mat, opaque and contributes to the whiteness of some Shino glazes without the use of Zirconium or Tin.

Colorants, such as Iron Oxide,Copper Carbonate or Cobalt Carbonate, and sometimes opacifiers such as Tin Oxide or Zirconium Oxide, are used to modify the visual appearance of the fired glaze.
Stoneware glazes reach maturity between cone 5 to 10. Often times in these glazes, part of the fluxing oxides is supplied by feldspars and feldspar-like materials. A potter’s palette of colors may seem subtle and rustic at high temperature as compared to low temperature where they are brighter and vibrant, but a good variety of colors may be achieved relatively easily.
High-fired glazes are simpler in composition, good ones are often composed of only three ingredients, feldspar, whiting and flint. Feldspathic materials may have quite similar melting points but they are not interchangeable due to the differences between them.
High Calcium glazes may be transparent and small amounts of Iron Oxide may produce a beautiful celadon color in reduction.

Our woodash was washed 5 times and 60-mesh sieved.

Unfortunately, sometimes the camera does not do justice to the quality of glazes for various technical reasons, the most important being the size of the pot to be photographed.
So we had to use descriptive names for the colors obtained in order to provide as much information on them as possible. If there is too much difference between the name and the picture, we must rely on the name which is descriptive.  Few books contain a lot of pictures of the results of tested recipes. We always supply a picture for a glaze recipe.

All of these glazes were fired in reductiom at cone 9 in a propane gaz kiln.

In the footsteps of Daniel Rhodes, ceramist and professor emeritus, designer of the first books on the components and theoretical and practical calculations for glazes (Clay and Glazes…) Edouard Bastarache creates, identifies and debunks the approaches used to compose high temperature glazes for stoneware and porcelain.
Supported by clear and precise writings, he supports his research by an exemplary practice illustrating thus "de visu" on pots  the countless facets of colors and textures resulting from his approach.
"Potpourri of Quebec Stoneware Glazes II" becomes the point of reference for professionals and novices and easily exceeds the limits of the current documentation.
